UTAH BADLANDS PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP
EXTENSIVE DETAILS
Physical Requirements: None. Almost every location we will be shooting from very close to the vehicle on differing 4x4 roads.
How to meet up on day #1: We will be meeting in the town of Hanksville, Utah. Participants will be responsible for driving themselves to our meeting point on day #1. The closest airport is Grand Junction, Colorado. The next best option would be Salt Lake City.
Note: If driving from Grand Junction, Colorado, this will bring you through the Arches and Canyonlands National Park areas. It’s worth incorporating a day on the way in or out from the workshop to shoot that area as well.
Day 1 - We will be meeting at 3PM at Whispering Sands Motel (90 UT-95, Hanksville, UT 84734). We will check in, and then head out for late afternoon and sunset shooting in Caineville Utah. You will want to have all of your gear packed and ready to go out for the afternoon through sunset. So, bring a snack, water and all lenses, cameras and drones. I have already arranged lodging there for us, which is included in the price of the workshop. We will check in, and then head out for sunset shooting. For anyone with drones, this will be a time to learn the necessary functions to capture photos with it.
Day 2 - Sunrise to mid-morning shooting at moonscape overlook and factory butte. This is an excellent drone location. We will take a short mid-day break, and then head back out to capture fall foliage images through sunset. After sunset we will snag some food, then head back out to shoot some night images. While the Milky Way will not be out, we will be shooting a great tower formation that works out great for night shooting.
Day 3 - Sunrise shooting at "Little Egypt". After light has gotten undesirable we will head back to hotel and will do some post processing work. We will again head back out to photograph the iconic Badland formations through sunset.
Day 4 - Sunrise shooting at the "Mars Hills". These are colorful red and white striped clay hills that look completely unearthly. This is one of the best drone locations out there. Regular cameras are great too, but a drone is the weapon of choice if available. After sunrise light has become harsh we will head back to the hotel and post process until check out time.
If you are going to stay the night before or after, I would recommend staying where I have lodging arranged for us, which is the Whispering Sands Motel in Hanksville, Utah.
